Dan O'Neil is running for one of the two open seats on the Milton School Committee. He and his wife, DaHuong, have three children in Milton Public Schools: Vivian (junior, Milton High), Regina (freshman, Milton High), and George (6th grade, Pierce Middle). The O'Neil family has lived in Milton for 15 years.
Dan teaches faith formation at Saint Elizabeth Church and has volunteered as a Milton youth soccer coach for six years. He serves as a Milton Town Meeting Member for Precinct 9 and is a board member of the Massachusetts Illegal Tobacco Task Force. He also spent 14 years as president of United We Stand for Jason, a charity supporting those with Huntington’s Disease.
Professionally, Dan has 23 years of experience as a financial investigator at the Massachusetts Office of the Inspector General, auditing state agencies, school districts, and municipalities. He currently works as Director of Compliance & Security at the Massachusetts State Lottery Commission, ensuring integrity in its operations.
Milton’s school budget process needs transparency, and financial strains affect all town departments, especially schools. To maintain level services next year, the school budget requires a $5.7 million increase, necessitating an operational override to prevent layoffs and program cuts. The current School Committee primarily consists of educators and nonprofit professionals with limited financial auditing experience. Dan brings a unique skill set in governmental auditing, ensuring a fiscally responsible approach to budgeting and resource allocation.
As parents of a special needs child, Dan and DaHuong understand the complexities of navigating the Special Education process. Dan will advocate for families, ensuring access to necessary services and programs. He is committed to being a strong voice for all children, especially those whose needs are often overlooked.
Dan will work collaboratively with parents and educators to strengthen Milton’s schools while maximizing limited resources. He recognizes the dedication of Milton’s teachers, paraprofessionals, and administrators and is committed to supporting them effectively.
Dan humbly asks for your vote on April 29th to bring his financial expertise, advocacy, and dedication to the Milton School Committee.
